# Geekvape coils, which value for an MTL, RDL or DTL draw?

> Geekvape coils from the B Series and Z XM ranges, which value and wattage suit an MTL, RDL or DTL draw, based on the bands Geekvape publishes.

Two Geekvape coils read 0.6 ohm and share the same 15 to 25 watt band, yet they do not give the same draw. Two others read 0.4 ohm, but one works at around 30 watts and the other above 50. Picking Geekvape coils from the number stamped on the part alone therefore often ends in vapour that runs too hot, or in a draw that feels nothing like the one you were after.

## Which Geekvape coils suit each draw style

The right choice among **Geekvape coils** starts with the series, then the version, and only then the ohm value. For a tight mouth-to-lung (MTL) draw, use an MTL version B Coil at 0.8 or 1.2 ohm. For a restricted direct lung (RDL) draw, the 0.6 ohm B Coil, or the 0.4 ohm in the Boost version. For a direct lung (DTL) draw, the Boost B Coils from 0.15 to 0.3 ohm, or the Z XM Coils on tanks from the Zeus range.

| Draw you want | Geekvape coil | Band published by Geekvape |
|---|---|---|
| Tight MTL | B Coil MTL 1.2 ohm | 8 to 12 W |
| Looser MTL | B Coil MTL 0.8 ohm | 12 to 16 W |
| RDL | B Coil MTL or Boost 0.6 ohm | 15 to 25 W |
| Open RDL | B Coil Boost 0.4 ohm | 25 to 35 W |
| Moderate DTL | B Coil Boost 0.3 ohm | 30 to 38 W |
| DTL | B Coil Boost 0.2 ohm | 50 to 58 W |
| Very airy DTL | B Coil Boost 0.15 ohm | 60 to 75 W |
| DTL on a Zeus tank | Z XM Coil 0.4, 0.2 or 0.15 ohm | 50 to 60 W, 70 to 80 W, 70 to 85 W |

The pairing of value and draw in this table is a reading of the wattage bands. Geekvape itself only labels the three MTL version B Coils as MTL.

## Two families of Geekvape coils, two approaches to the draw

Geekvape's current range lists two families of replacement coils, the B Series and the Z Series. They do not fit the same devices and are not built for the same amount of air.

### The B Series, from tight MTL to DTL

According to Geekvape's own page, B Coils fit the Z Nano 3 tank, the Z Nano 2, the Z Nano MTL, the Boost cartridge, the Aegis Hero cartridge and the Force cartridge. It is the broadest family, covering the whole range of draws from 8 to 75 watts.

It comes in two versions. The Boost version goes down to 0.15 ohm and is aimed at dense vapour. The MTL version has three values, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.2 ohm, and is aimed at mouth-to-lung vaping. Both share the same connection and swap freely in the same device.

### Z XM Coils, built for direct lung vaping

Boost version Z XM Coils fit the sub-ohm tanks of the Zeus range, including the Z Subohm Tank 5. Geekvape presents them as designed for direct lung vaping, in three values, 0.15 ohm at 70 to 85 watts, 0.2 ohm at 70 to 80 watts and 0.4 ohm at 50 to 60 watts.

No Z XM Coil goes below 50 watts. On a Zeus sub-ohm tank a tight draw is simply not on the menu, and a Z Nano with an MTL B Coil is the better route.

## Why the ohm value alone does not predict the draw

Comparing the two families shows the trap. The 0.4 ohm Boost B Coil is rated at 25 to 35 watts, the Z XM Coil of the same value at 50 to 60 watts. The two parts are designed for different devices, and the useful power nearly doubles from one to the other.

The same logic applies inside the B Series. The Boost version and the MTL version each offer a 0.6 ohm coil, with the same 15 to 25 watt band. Geekvape files the MTL version among its mouth-to-lung coils and leaves the Boost version out. At equal value, it is the design of the part that steers the draw.

Our guide to [coil resistance](/uk/coil-resistance-value/) sets out the link between ohms, watts and vapour volume. The point to keep here is that Geekvape coils are always read with their series and version, never by their number alone.

## Setting power and airflow with Geekvape coils

Once the coil is fitted, the draw is built with two settings, power and airflow. The Z Nano 3 and the Z Subohm Tank 5 both have adjustable airflow at the top of the tank.

### Start at the bottom of the band

Begin at the bottom of the published band, then climb one or two watts at a time until the flavour opens out. The top of the band is a limit. Geekvape itself lists excessive power and a coil used outside its band among the causes of early wear.

### Close or open the air to suit the value

With a 1.2 ohm MTL B Coil, the airflow closes almost fully to recreate a tight draw, close to what our guide to [MTL vaping](/uk/mtl-vaping-explained/) describes. With a 0.15 ohm Boost B Coil or a Z XM Coil it opens wide, otherwise the vapour runs hot and catches the throat. Our piece on [DTL and RDL vaping](/uk/dtl-and-rdl-vaping/) gives the markers for each style.

## Matching the e-liquid to Geekvape coils

Geekvape publishes a guide pairing coil values with e-liquid types. The 0.2 and 0.3 ohm values suit low-strength freebase nicotine for a direct lung draw, it says. The 0.8 and 1.2 ohm values suit nicotine salts or stronger freebase for a tight draw, and the 0.4 and 0.6 ohm values take either.

Some of the salt strengths Geekvape quotes exceed the UK ceiling. Nicotine e-liquid sold in the UK is capped at 20 mg/ml, in bottles of no more than 10 ml. Our comparison of [nic salts and freebase](/uk/nic-salts-vs-freebase/) explains why the two forms feel different in the throat.

Viscosity matters too. Geekvape notes that a high-VG liquid, thicker in body, soaks into the cotton more slowly and gunks up the coil faster. As a general rule, a thinner liquid suits the higher values, which vaporise less liquid with each puff.

## Priming and replacing Geekvape coils

A new coil must be soaked before the first puff. Geekvape advises waiting 3 to 5 minutes after filling and offers two ways to speed things up. The first is to drip a few drops of liquid onto the cotton through the coil's wicking holes before fitting it. The second is to take a few gentle puffs, device switched off and airflow reduced, once the tank is full.

The manufacturer also gives a rough lifespan, expressed as the volume of liquid vaporised. A Boost B Coil should last about 50 to 60 ml according to the product page on the Geekvape site, while the brand's official store gives 40 ml. The manufacturer contradicts itself from one page to the other; for an MTL B Coil, the product page gives about 20 to 30 ml. A burnt taste or fading flavour means it is time to change it.

Capacity needs one clarification. Geekvape quotes 5 ml for the Z Nano 3, but refillable tanks sold in the UK are capped at 2 ml, so the version on British shelves holds less. The box is the reference.

## FAQ

These questions come up often when looking for replacement Geekvape coils without knowing the reference of the part in place.

### Do older B Coils fit a newer device?

Yes. Geekvape states that the Boost version and the earlier B Coil share the same connection, and that both fit any device that takes the B Coil. The manufacturer quotes a lifespan roughly twice as long for the Boost version.

### Can a Z XM Coil go into a Z Nano?

No. The Z Nano 3 page lists only the B Series. Z XM Coils fit devices that accept the Z Coil, such as the Z Subohm Tank 5.

### Why do coils from the same pack last different lengths of time?

Geekvape points to back-to-back puffs that leave the cotton no time to resoak, power set too high, priming cut short and very high-VG liquids. Coils from one pack can therefore wear at different rates.

### Do B Coils fit an Aegis Boost pod?

Yes. The B Series page lists the Boost cartridge among compatible devices, alongside the Aegis Hero cartridge and the Force cartridge. The pod takes both the MTL and the Boost version.

### What should I check when fitting a new coil?

Geekvape recommends checking that the tank holds liquid, that the coil is pushed fully home for a good contact, and that the power set matches the band of the new value.

## Choosing Geekvape coils by draw

The right habit takes four steps. Identify the series your device accepts, B Series or Z Series, pick the version that matches your style, MTL or Boost, then the value, and set the power from the bottom of the published band.

The draw is finished at the airflow, closed for mouth-to-lung vaping and opened for dense vapour. The range therefore covers every draw style, provided you choose each of your **Geekvape coils** by reading the wattage band before the ohm figure.
